Mohamed Elneny hailed as key signing for Levadiakos project

Mohamed Elneny will play an important role in Levadiakos’ plans for the next stage of the club’s development, according to sporting director Michalis Nicolopoulos.

The Greek club confirmed the signing of the former Arsenal midfielder on a one-season contract after completing the deal as a free agent. Nicolopoulos said negotiations with Elneny began 10 days before the agreement was reached.

“We started negotiations with Mohamed Elneny 10 days ago and reached an agreement,” Nicolopoulos told MBC Masr 2. “It is a great opportunity for us to sign him because he is a great player.”

He added: “Mohamed Elneny is an important player for the club’s project in the coming period and he will have a prominent role with the team.”

Nicolopoulos also indicated that Levadiakos could look to the Egyptian market again, saying the club has been monitoring Egypt’s national team and its players.

“We follow the Egypt national team closely, and Egyptian players in general are of interest to us because of their quality and technical ability,” he said.

Elneny joined Al Jazira in the summer of 2024 after his contract with Arsenal ended. His move to Levadiakos represents the sixth professional club of his career, which began with El Mokawloon.

The 33-year-old has also played for Basel, Arsenal, Besiktas and Al Jazira. His time at Arsenal followed his move from Basel, while his career has included spells in Egypt, Switzerland, England, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Levadiakos are currently bottom of the Greek league, with one point from five matches. The club finished last season in fifth place with 42 points but have endured a difficult start to the new campaign.

They have been beaten by PAOK, Panathinaikos, Panetolikos and Olympiacos. Their only point came in a goalless draw against Kifisia.

Elneny’s arrival therefore comes as Levadiakos seek to improve their results after losing four of their opening five matches. Nicolopoulos believes the Egypt international’s experience and ability will make him a significant part of the club’s plans during the season.
