Mohamed El Kordany steps down as Qatar basketball coach before season starts

Mohamed El Kordany has apologised for not continuing as head coach of Qatar’s basketball team, just one day before the start of the Qatari Basketball League.

El Kordany’s decision was prompted by personal circumstances, according to information obtained by FilGoal.com. The Qatari league is due to begin on Saturday, 10 October.

The former Egypt national team coach had been appointed to lead Qatar, but will now leave the role before the new season gets under way.

El Kordany has held a number of coaching positions during his career. His previous clubs and teams include Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, Libya’s Al Ahly Tripoli, the Saudi Arabia national team, Tunisia’s US Monastir, and Egyptian clubs Al Jazira and Al-Ittihad Alexandria.

He also became the first Egyptian coach to lead a team in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), taking charge of Tunisian club US Monastir in the continental competition.

Last year, El Kordany helped Al Ahly Tripoli claim the bronze medal at the Basketball Intercontinental Cup, securing the achievement for the club for the first time in its history.

He has also managed Egypt Under-18s, guiding the team to third place at the African Championship.

During his time with Al Jazira, El Kordany won domestic honours, leading the club to both the league and cup titles.
