Senegal Hit with Blow: Mohamed Diamé Doubtful for 2015 AFCON
Senegal may be forced to do without one of their midfield pillars at the upcoming 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, as Mohamed Diamé faces a race against time to be fit.
The Hull City midfielder picked up a knee tendon injury during his club’s Premier League matchday 14 clash against Everton (1-1), which he exited shortly before the final whistle. The injury has cast major doubt over his availability for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea, which kicks off in just over a month.
Initial assessments from his club’s medical staff suggest a minimum three-week layoff, but other sources are reporting that Diamé could be sidelined for up to six weeks. Such a timeline would make it almost impossible for him to participate in Senegal’s pre-tournament training camp, and his inclusion in Alain Giresse’s final squad is now in serious jeopardy.
The absence of the former West Ham and Wigan player would be a significant setback for the Lions of Teranga, especially considering their placement in Group C, the so-called “group of death,” alongside Ghana, Algeria, and South Africa.
