Mohamed Bassiouny: Egypt right-back calls time on career after long top-flight stint

Egyptian right-back Mohamed Bassiouny has retired from professional football, bringing an extensive career in the Egyptian Premier League to a close. The 36-year-old, who had most recently been without a club, has officially ended his playing days after more than a decade in the top flight.

Born in Port Said and predominantly a right-back, Bassiouny built his reputation as a dependable defender across several Egyptian clubs. He most recently featured for Bank El Ahly, having joined them from Enppi SC in November 2020, before departing the club in the summer of 2025.

Bassiouny’s most established spell came in the Premier League, where he amassed 290 appearances. Across league and cup competitions, he contributed 17 goals and 24 assists, underlining his ability to support attacks from the flank as well as perform his defensive duties.

Earlier in his career, he moved from El Shorta to Enppi SC on a free transfer in 2016, a step that helped cement his status in the top division. Prior to that, he had stints with El Masry and El Mareekh, including a loan spell before returning from that loan to his parent club.

Across all competitions, Bassiouny played over 22,000 senior minutes, featuring in the Egyptian Premier League, Egypt Cup, League Cup and Championship playoff matches. His retirement marks the conclusion of a long-serving domestic career for the Egyptian defender.
