Mohamed Amoura eyeing Nice loan as Wolfsburg exit offers route back to form
Mohamed Amoura is expected to join Nice on loan with an option to buy worth about €20m, despite concerns among some Algeria supporters over the Ligue 1 club’s recent history.
The transfer is not yet official, but negotiations are understood to be at an advanced stage. Amoura is expected on the French Riviera on Monday to undergo a medical before completing the move.
Nice have beaten competition from Al-Sadd and moved ahead of several other interested clubs, including Rennes, Udinese and Lyon. Some Algeria fans had preferred Lyon or Marseille, whose strong popular followings made them more appealing destinations for supporters of the Fennecs.
The prospect of Amoura joining Nice has prompted criticism on social media because of a number of off-field controversies associated with the club.
The case of Youcef Atal remains particularly prominent. Nice suspended the full-back in autumn 2023 after he shared and then deleted a video containing antisemitic material. Atal was later sentenced on appeal to an eight-month suspended prison term and fined €45,000 for inciting hatred on religious grounds.
Nice have also been marked by the Christophe Galtier affair. The former manager was accused of discriminating against Muslim players, although he was ultimately acquitted.
The handling of Hicham Boudaoui’s situation has caused further frustration. The midfielder is now expected to leave for Al-Ittihad as Nice responds to pressure to reduce its spending. The club had previously rejected attempts to sell him during earlier transfer windows, including after Galatasaray failed with an approach at a time when Boudaoui wanted a change. That sequence of events left the impression that he had been kept at Nice for some time before becoming available for transfer.
A chance to rebuild momentum
Despite the unease surrounding the move, Nice represents an almost unavoidable sporting choice for Amoura at this stage of his career.
The Algeria international made a major impact at Union Saint-Gilloise, scoring 22 goals in 45 appearances, before quickly showing his potential after moving to Wolfsburg. He scored eight Bundesliga goals last season, but Wolfsburg were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga.
Amoura has been less influential since the start of 2026, while the second half of the campaign was also affected by tensions at Wolfsburg. A move to Nice would give him an immediate opportunity to restore his confidence and rediscover the form that made him one of the most exciting Algerian forwards in Europe.
Nice remain an established Ligue 1 club and can offer Amoura a competitive top-flight environment, as well as greater exposure than Germany’s second tier. Under manager Olivier Pantaloni, he will compete for opportunities with Elye Wahi.
The club’s past does not necessarily make it an unsuitable destination for Algerian players. Liazid Sandjak made 103 appearances for Nice, scoring 29 goals, and helped the team win promotion in 1994.
Amoura will hope to follow that example and overcome the reservations surrounding his move. For now, the proposed transfer offers both Nice an attacking option and the 24-year-old a platform to relaunch his career after a difficult spell in Germany.
