Mohamed Aboutrika, former Al Ahly player and Egyptian national team member, expressed his delight at witnessing the opening of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, scheduled to kick off today, Saturday.
Côte d’Ivoire is hosting the AFCON 2023 tournament from January 13 to February 11, with the participation of 24 teams.
Speaking to beIN Sports, Aboutrika stated, “The opening ceremony had a light-hearted atmosphere, conveying messages through dance and song.
The vibrant colors create an optimistic ambiance.
It’s a successful start with a light-hearted atmosphere.
This nation finds itself in dance; the colors are uplifting.”
He added, “The opening reflects that Africans are beginning to utilize their resources for the benefit of their people.
The opening impressed me and suggests that Africa is on the right path.”
“Arabs feel somewhat distant from Central and West Africa.
The timing of the AFCON is determined by the African Union, without dictates from FIFA or the European governing bodies.
This independence is something I hope will continue,” Aboutrika explained.
Regarding Renard, he stated, “Renard is the best coach to deal with Côte d’Ivoire.
I faced this team more than once; their players are known for their excellence.
He turned the stars into a collective unit, leading them to victory in 2015.”
“On paper, Côte d’Ivoire is one of the top contenders for the title, especially considering the hosting challenge.
Historically, the host country rarely wins the tournament, except for Egypt in 2006,” he remarked.
Concluding his thoughts, Aboutrika commented, “Côte d’Ivoire’s national team looks ready on paper, a well-rounded team.
However, reality is different, and the first match will carry significant implications.”
