Mohamed Abou Gabal has taken the next step in his career after recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, signing a two-year deal with Modern Sport.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper, a key figure in Egypt’s recent football history, joins the club after his contract with the National Bank side ended.
There had been talk of a potential return to his former team Zamalek, where he previously made his name, but those plans did not materialize. Instead, Modern Sport moved quickly to secure the experienced shot-stopper, officially announcing the signing on Friday.
Abou Gabal, also known as “Gabaski,” captured the hearts of many fans during the 2021 African Cup of Nations, where his standout performances helped Egypt reach the final. His heroics in goal were pivotal, even though the Pharaohs eventually fell to Senegal in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Throughout his career, Abou Gabal has represented Enppi, Smouha, Zamalek, and the National Bank. He also played 12 matches for the national team, making a solid mark with his composure and skill between the posts.
