Moghreb Athletic Tetouan sign Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal

Moghreb Athletic Tetouan have completed the signing of Egypt international goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal, the Moroccan club announced on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old joins after leaving Modern Sport at the end of last season and will begin the first overseas spell of his career with the Moroccan side.

The club said on its website: “Moghreb Athletic Tetouan completed today, Wednesday, the signing of Egyptian international goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal to strengthen the team for the current sporting season.”

The contract was signed by club president Mohamed Joudouni in the presence of members of the board and the player’s representative.

The club added: “The contract was signed by the club president Mohamed Joudouni, in the presence of members of the board of directors and the player’s representative, in an atmosphere reflecting the official nature of the contract-completion ceremony.”

Moghreb Athletic Tetouan described Abou Gabal’s international experience with Egypt as an important addition to the team’s goalkeeping department. The club also said he was one of the leading names in its new project.

Known as Gabaski, Abou Gabal has spent his entire club career in Egypt. He began with ENPPI before moving to Zamalek, then joining Smouha. He later returned to Zamalek, before spells with National Bank of Egypt and Modern Sport.

He has made 296 appearances for Egyptian clubs, conceding 288 goals and recording 109 clean sheets.

Abou Gabal has also represented Egypt internationally and brings experience from his time with the national team to his new club.

His move to Moghreb Athletic Tetouan represents his first opportunity to play outside Egypt. The veteran goalkeeper left Modern Sport at the conclusion of the previous season before completing the switch to Morocco.

The club have also changed manager, with Amin Kerma taking charge in place of Abdelkrim Jinani. Jinani left the role by mutual agreement.

Abou Gabal’s arrival gives Kerma an experienced option in goal as Moghreb Athletic Tetouan prepare for the current season. The club has presented the goalkeeper as a central part of its plans after finalising a deal involving its president, board members and the player’s representative.

With 296 appearances for Egyptian clubs and 109 clean sheets to his name, the former Zamalek and Modern Sport goalkeeper arrives with extensive domestic experience, while his international background with Egypt adds another dimension to Moghreb Athletic Tetouan’s squad.
