Mofokeng set for instant shot at silverware with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise

Relebohile Mofokeng is poised to make his first competitive appearance for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in a Belgian Super Cup clash against Club Brugge on Friday – with the 19-year-old already facing the prospect of lifting a European domestic trophy in his debut outing.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder joins the Belgian club at the start of a demanding nine-day spell in which Union SG will compete in three different competitions, including UEFA Champions League qualifying and the opening round of the Belgian Pro League.

Award-laden send-off before European step

Mofokeng heads into this new chapter on the back of a highly decorated domestic season in South Africa.

Earlier in the week, he collected a clean sweep of major individual honours: the Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards. The trio of accolades came with combined prize money of R500,000.

Those awards underlined his status as one of the most exciting young talents to leave the Premier Soccer League for Europe in recent years, and his new club will now waste no time in integrating him into high-stakes fixtures.

Belgian Super Cup the first test

Mofokeng’s first assignment is the Belgian Super Cup on Friday evening at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Brugge, where Royale Union Saint-Gilloise face Club Brugge.

The Super Cup is traditionally contested by the winners of the Belgian Pro League and the Belgian Cup. Club Brugge earned their place as league champions, while Union SG secured their slot after lifting the Belgian Cup, having defeated RSC Anderlecht in the final.

Victory in Brugge would see Mofokeng claim his first piece of silverware in European football on his competitive debut for the club.

Champions League qualifiers on the horizon

There will be little time for recovery after the Super Cup, with Union SG and Mofokeng then turning their attention to the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.

The Belgian side face Norwegian club FK Bodø/Glimt, with the first leg scheduled for Tuesday and the return fixture taking place seven days later.

Should Union SG progress from that tie, they will move into the Champions League play-off round – the final qualifying hurdle before the group stage, where Europe’s elite clubs await.

If they fail to advance through the Champions League pathway, they will drop into the Europa League, ensuring continued continental involvement for the Brussels-based side and their new South African signing.

League opener completes hectic first week

Amid those European commitments, Mofokeng is also set to make his Belgian Pro League bow.

Between the two legs against FK Bodø/Glimt, Union SG travel to Westerlo for their league opener on 8 August, a short domestic trip but another significant step in the teenager’s early days at the club.

If selected across the Belgian Super Cup, Champions League qualifiers and the Pro League curtain-raiser, Mofokeng will feature in three different competitions in just over a week.

Such a concentrated run of high-profile fixtures is expected to enhance both his exposure and his market value, as he looks to translate his award-winning form from South Africa onto the European stage.
