Modern Sport took a huge step in the relegation fight after edging Ismaily 2-1 at Ismailia Stadium on Friday, pushing the home side closer to a historic drop from the Egyptian Premier League.
Marwan Hamdy put Ismaily ahead in the 29th minute after a precise delivery from Eric Traore. But Modern hit back through a 51st-minute penalty before Mohamed Helal punished a defensive mistake by Ali Al Malwani in the 76th minute to seal the win.
The result leaves Ismaily stuck on 19 points at the bottom, while Modern climb to seventh with 22 points under Algerian boss Abdelhak Ben Sheikha.
El Gouna made a loud statement in the same round, thrashing Ghazl El Mahalla 4-0 away. Marwan Mohsen scored early from the spot, and Mahalla’s woes deepened with Mourou Traore’s red card. Mohamed Emad, Ali El-Zohdy, and Samuel Ojo all netted in a dominant show.
El Gouna now lead the group with 30 points. Smouha and Al Ittihad drew 0-0 in Alexandria, while Enppi and Tala’a El Gaish shared a 1-1 result in Cairo.
