Mitchell Weiser’s Algeria dream faces uncertainty

Mitchell Weiser’s ambition to represent Algeria on the international stage appears to have hit a significant roadblock.

The Werder Bremen right-back, who switched his sporting nationality to honor his Algerian maternal heritage, has found himself omitted from recent squad selections, leaving his international future in doubt.

Weiser, a former Germany U21 international, had pinned his hopes on making his debut for the Desert Foxes, especially during the ongoing AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

However, the 30-year-old was notably absent from coach Vladimir Petkovic’s latest squad—a decision that has raised eyebrows both in Algeria and at his Bundesliga club.

Confusion Over Call-Up

Initially, Werder Bremen announced that Weiser had received an official call-up from the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).

This announcement seemed to confirm his long-anticipated inclusion in the national team setup.

However, the club later clarified that the communication from the FAF was ambiguous and did not constitute a definitive invitation.

Despite his standout performances in the Bundesliga—where he was recently named the league’s best full-back for the first half of the season—Weiser’s prospects with Algeria remain uncertain.

Petkovic, when questioned about the omission, mentioned exploring “other options” but provided no specific explanation for Weiser’s exclusion.

Algerian Federation’s Silence

Reports from El Watan suggest that Algerian football officials may have decided against integrating Weiser into the national team.

The exact reasons behind this potential decision remain unclear, adding further mystery to the situation.

If confirmed, this development could effectively end Weiser’s chances of representing Algeria in the foreseeable future, including the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Uncertain Path Ahead
For Weiser, the situation is a disappointing twist in what seemed like a promising opportunity to reignite his international career.

The defender, known for his dynamic runs and defensive stability, has consistently delivered top-level performances for Werder Bremen.

Yet, his efforts have yet to translate into a call-up to the Algerian squad.

As of now, the 30-year-old’s future with the Desert Foxes remains in limbo.

While Weiser has expressed his commitment to representing Algeria, the lack of clear communication and the apparent hesitation from national team officials may force him to reconsider his international aspirations.

This uncertain chapter underscores the complexities that can arise when players attempt to switch national allegiances, even with the best intentions and high-level performances to back their case.
