Milford boss Pupuma targets strong finish after impressive Premiership start

Milford FC chairman and head coach Xanti Pupuma believes his side can finish in a respectable position in their first Betway Premiership season after an encouraging opening to the campaign.

The newly promoted Stallions have won five, drawn three and lost two of their first nine matches, leaving them fourth in the table on 18 points.

Although Pupuma has stopped short of predicting a title challenge, he is confident Milford can continue collecting points and end the season strongly.

The club’s early form has surprised many observers, but Pupuma says it has not caught him off guard. He believes the performances reflect the ability of a group of players who have been together for a considerable period.

“In nine games, we wanted 27 points, but we will take the 15 [before the Sekhukhune win],” Pupuma said.

“We always challenge ourselves and as a brand, we will try to push ourselves to the limit.

“So, it will sound like I’m arrogant or full of myself when I say I’m not surprised by how they have played. I really think they are doing what they are capable of.

“And I believe the team will continue to accumulate points. I’m not saying we’re going to win the league but we’re going to end in a respectable position.

“And that’s going to happen for some time because these guys can actually play and have been together for a long time, so we know each other.”

Milford’s results have placed them firmly among the early contenders for a strong finish, with their only two defeats coming in their opening nine fixtures. Their return of 18 points has provided a solid foundation for the remainder of their debut top-flight campaign.

Pupuma acknowledged that the team had initially aimed for a perfect return from its first nine matches, but said the points already secured represented a positive start. He also stressed that Milford would continue to demand the highest standards from themselves as they seek to maintain their progress.
