Milan say farewell as Rafael Leao completes Galatasaray transfer
AC Milan have announced that Portugal winger Rafael Leao has left the club to join Galatasaray on a permanent transfer this summer.
The Italian club confirmed the move on Sunday in a statement published on its official website.
“AC Milan announces the permanent transfer of its player Rafael Alexandre da Conceicao Leao to Turkish club Galatasaray,” the statement said.
Leao departs after seven seasons with Milan, having established himself as one of the most influential players in the Rossoneri attack during his time at San Siro.
Milan thanked the 26-year-old for the professionalism and passion he showed while wearing the club’s shirt, and acknowledged his contribution to two major honours.
The Portugal international played a significant part in Milan’s Serie A title success during the 2021-22 season. He also helped the club win the Italian Super Cup in 2024.
Milan wished Leao every success, both personally and professionally, as he begins the next chapter of his career in Turkey.
The club also marked his departure on social media with a message reflecting on the time he spent in red and black.
“Seven years together and so many moments we’ll never forget 🏄♂️Thank you for everything, Rafa ❤️🖤🔗https://t.co/PRNlQjk4C7pic.twitter.com/qCRf30trI8”
Leao’s permanent move to Galatasaray follows a reported agreement between the two clubs. Sky Sport Italia previously reported that Galatasaray would pay €43m as a fixed fee, with a further €2m available in variables and bonuses.
The agreement also includes a 20% sell-on clause for Milan, meaning the Italian club will retain a share of any profit from a future sale of the player.
Milan did not include the financial details in the wording of their announcement, but confirmed that Leao’s transfer had been completed.
His exit brings to an end a seven-year spell that included the club’s Serie A triumph and Italian Super Cup success, before the winger moved on to Galatasaray for the next stage of his career.
