Mikel slams Fernandez over Madrid comments, warns against disrespecting Chelsea
Former John Obi Mikel has publicly criticised Enzo Fernandez following the midfielder’s remarks about a potential future move to Real Madrid, insisting the club should never be treated as a stepping stone.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in a high-profile move, is reportedly attracting strong interest from the Spanish giants ahead of the summer transfer window.
His recent comments suggesting openness to a future switch to Madrid have, however, sparked backlash among sections of the club’s former players and supporters.
Mikel, a key figure during one of Chelsea’s most successful eras, did not hold back in his assessment of the situation. The former Nigeria international questioned the midfielder’s commitment, arguing that such statements undermine the values traditionally associated with the club.
“This is Chelsea, not a stepping stone to another team. If your heart is already in Madrid, you shouldn’t wear the blue jersey,” Mikel said.
The ex-midfielder, who spent over a decade at Stamford Bridge and won multiple major honours, emphasised the importance of loyalty and identity, drawing a contrast between his generation and the modern transfer climate.
“At Chelsea, we played for the coat of arms, not for a future transfer…” he added.
Fernandez has been a central figure in Chelsea’s midfield since his arrival, but the team’s inconsistency in recent seasons has fuelled speculation about the long-term futures of several key players. Interest from elite European clubs has only intensified scrutiny around individuals viewed as pivotal to the club’s rebuilding process.
Reports in Spain indicate that Real Madrid have placed Fernandez high on their shortlist as they look to reinforce their midfield options. The club is believed to be prioritising the Argentine ahead of Rodri of Manchester City, underlining the level of regard for his technical quality and potential.
While no formal bid has been confirmed, the growing noise around a possible move has placed Chelsea in a delicate position. The London club are expected to resist any approach, viewing Fernandez as integral to their long-term project despite ongoing challenges on the pitch.
Mikel’s comments are likely to resonate strongly within the Chelsea fanbase, where expectations around commitment and professionalism remain high.
