John Obi Mikel mocks Arsenal fans after Vinicius Junior commits future to Real Madrid
Former Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has reignited his war of words with Arsenal supporters after Vinicius Junior agreed a new contract with Real Madrid.
The former Chelsea midfielder had previously warned Arsenal fans against expecting the Brazilian forward to leave the Spanish giants for the Premier League club.
With Vinicius now committed to Real Madrid, Mikel used the development to revisit his earlier comments and question why Arsenal supporters believed the 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up would move to north London.
Mikel says Arsenal fans were ‘humiliated’
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel reflected on the transfer speculation and suggested Arsenal fans had been “humiliated” by the outcome.
The former midfielder had earlier advised supporters to “forget” about Vinicius, arguing that the winger’s links with Arsenal could have been used to strengthen his position during contract negotiations with Real Madrid.
Mikel questioned what Arsenal fans had “expected”, pointing to Real Madrid’s record of success and their ability to compete for major trophies every season.
Real Madrid success a major factor
Mikel also compared Real Madrid’s achievements with Arsenal’s continued wait for a Champions League title.
The Nigerian argued that Vinicius had little incentive to leave a club where he regularly competes for the biggest honours in European football.
The Brazilian has already enjoyed considerable success since joining Real Madrid, including winning the Champions League, and remains one of the club’s most important attacking players.
Vinicius’ new contract has now brought an end to speculation over a possible move to Arsenal, allowing Real Madrid to retain one of the leading forwards of their current generation.
For Mikel, the development has provided another opportunity to remind Arsenal supporters of his earlier prediction that Vinicius would remain at the Spanish giants.
