Mikel Arteta expects Bukayo Saka to return stronger after injury setback

Mikel Arteta believes Bukayo Saka will come back sharper and more energised after recovering from the Achilles injury that kept him out of Arsenal’s last five matches.

The manager admitted the winger had been going through a difficult spell before the break.

“Bukayo’s had a tough period and we certainly missed him,” Arteta told reporters, explaining that the club deliberately gave him time away to reset physically and mentally. “We have given him some time because there was a moment that he was struggling to sustain the performances because he wasn’t comfortable at all.”

According to Arteta, that pause was as much about headspace as healing. “So, he has had the right treatment, the right space. He has had some time for himself, too, and now it’s the most important part of the season,” he said, adding that it allowed Saka “to reflect and have some peace” after months of constant demands.

Arteta stressed that the decision on his return was also left in the player’s hands. “It was a moment to say: ‘Okay, now when you feel ready let us know and we’ll go for it,’” he explained, sounding delighted with the response. “He was in great spirits today, the sun is shining, he’s back with the team, and he brings us a different energy.”
