Mikel Arteta agrees to extend Arsenal contract until 2029

Mikel Arteta has agreed to extend his contract as Arsenal manager, according to the BBC.

The club have completed the final details of a new agreement with the Spaniard, whose current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027. The expected extension would keep him at Arsenal until the summer of 2029.

Arteta has guided Arsenal to the English Premier League title, ending the club’s 22-year wait for the championship. His success has strengthened the manager’s position at the club and follows a period of uncertainty over whether he could leave.

Arteta previously dismissed those doubts, saying: “The timing of the contract will not be a problem because my desire is definitely to stay here and I am extremely happy here.”

He added: “My feeling towards the club is the same, and that is why everyone is doing things in a very natural way.”

Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick also indicated that an announcement on a longer-term deal was close.

“It is just a matter of time before the signing of a long-term contract with Arteta is announced,” Garlick said.

Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019.
