Mike Dean insists Premier League refereeing integrity was never in doubt after remarks

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has defended his record after revealing that he used to set himself personal challenges while officiating matches, including trying to avoid blowing his whistle for as long as possible.

Dean said he sometimes attempted to remain inside the centre circle during games or go without using his whistle for extended periods. His comments, made during an appearance on former striker Jamie Vardy’s programme, prompted a strong reaction and raised questions about the professionalism and integrity of refereeing in England’s top flight.

The former official explained that he had treated the challenges as a form of light-hearted amusement. In some matches, before the introduction of Video Assistant Referee technology, he said he managed to go between 20 and 25 minutes without blowing his whistle.

On another occasion, Dean said he tried to stay within the centre circle for about 15 minutes.

The remarks attracted widespread criticism, with opponents arguing that Premier League matches should not be used as a setting for individual challenges or personal games. They questioned whether such behaviour could affect the nature of refereeing decisions, particularly given that Dean officiated more than 550 Premier League matches during a career lasting over two decades.

As the reaction intensified, Dean issued a statement on social media to clarify his comments. He said his words were not intended to undermine the integrity of English refereeing or cast doubt on the standards of his fellow officials.

“During 25 years as a professional referee, I always applied the laws of the game to the best of my ability,” Dean said.

He added that his approach had been to allow play to continue whenever possible, while maintaining a high threshold for contact and only intervening when an incident required a refereeing decision.

Dean said that offences which did require action were dealt with appropriately. He also emphasised his respect for the profession and the responsibility involved in officiating at the highest level.

“It was never my intention to undermine the integrity of refereeing in my country, and I have always respected the profession and the responsibility that comes with being a referee,” he said.

Dean retired from refereeing in 2022 after more than two decades in the profession. During that period, he took charge of over 550 Premier League fixtures, making him one of the most experienced officials in the competition’s history.

His explanation comes after the original comments led to renewed scrutiny of the demands placed on referees and the standards expected during Premier League matches. Dean maintained that his remarks were made in a joking context and did not reflect any lack of commitment to applying the laws of the game.
