Miguel Cardoso under pressure as Sundowns face Champions League test

Mamelodi Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso faces a pivotal night on Friday as the defending champions seek to overcome Wiliete SC and reach the CAF Champions League group stages.

Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw by the Angolan side in the first leg in Lubango, leaving them needing an outright victory in the return fixture at home. Any score draw, such as 1-1 or 2-2, would eliminate the South African club under the away-goals rule because they failed to score in Angola.

For a club of Sundowns’ stature, continental success is regarded as the minimum expectation. Failure to qualify for the group stages would not only have significant financial consequences but would also represent their worst continental campaign in a decade.

Cardoso signed a contract extension running until June 2028 and recently guided Sundowns to the MTN8 title. However, those achievements are unlikely to provide much protection if the club’s Champions League campaign ends at the second preliminary round.

There are growing indications within the club that a trophyless continental season would be viewed unfavourably by the hierarchy, placing the Portuguese coach under immediate pressure at Chloorkop.

Cardoso has spoken publicly about the physical demands placed on his squad, citing fixture congestion and fatigue following a demanding domestic schedule. He must also assess the fitness of key midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who is facing a possible recurrence of a ligament-related injury.

Wiliete pose organised challenge

Although Cardoso has led Esperance Tunis and Sundowns to three successive continental finals, that record will offer little comfort if his side cannot break down Wiliete.

The Angolan club currently lead the Girabola and demonstrated in the first leg that they have the tactical discipline to frustrate Sundowns’ possession-based pressing approach. Their organisation ensured the Brazilians were unable to establish a decisive advantage in Lubango.

The 54-year-old has called for a significant improvement from his players in the second leg, demanding a more courageous and aggressive attacking display.

Sundowns must win to keep their defence of the CAF Champions League alive. A failure to do so could quickly turn what appeared to be a secure tenure for Cardoso into a period of serious uncertainty.
