Mighty Wanderers turn to Patrick Mabedi after Airtel Top 8 heartbreak as Bob Mpinganjira suspended

Mighty Wanderers have moved swiftly to bring in former Malawi national team head coach Patrick Mabedi as Technical Consultant as the club begins an urgent rebuild following their Airtel Top 8 final heartbreak.

The appointment comes just hours after head coach Bob Mpinganjira was suspended with immediate effect following Sunday’s shock 2-1 defeat to tournament debutants Ekhaya FC.

The result has prompted swift action from the Wanderers hierarchy, with the club turning to Mabedi for technical direction at a critical stage of the season.

Wanderers are now preparing for a demanding CAF Champions League assignment against Tanzanian giants Simba SC, making the timing of the changes particularly significant.

Mabedi handed key role in Nomads’ reset

Mabedi is expected to provide technical guidance as the Nomads attempt to recover from the setback and restore confidence within the squad.

His arrival gives Wanderers an experienced figure to lean on as they seek to navigate the immediate challenges ahead while assessing the direction of the team following Mpinganjira’s suspension.

Assistant coach MacDonald Nginde Mtetemera has meanwhile been placed in interim charge of the first team.

Mtetemera will work alongside Mabedi as Wanderers attempt to stabilise the squad and prepare adequately for their continental commitments.

Former Malawi boss brings elite experience

Mabedi arrives with considerable experience from some of the biggest clubs and assignments in the region.

The former Malawi international has previously worked as an assistant coach at Tanzanian powerhouse Yanga SC and South African giants Kaizer Chiefs.

He also had a spell in charge of the Malawi national team, giving him experience at both club and international level.

Wanderers will hope that expertise can help them quickly recover their winning touch after a damaging defeat and navigate what promises to be a difficult CAF Champions League campaign.
