Ahmed Hossam “Mido” has cast doubt on Riyad Mahrez’s ability to thrive in Al-Ahly Jeddah’s system, suggesting the Algerian star may not be suited for his current role.
Mahrez, who arrived from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, has faced criticism for inconsistent performances, with Al-Ahly struggling at times. Mido believes the winger’s playing style no longer fits the demands of his club.
“I think Mahrez cannot play in the center of the pavilion with a team the size of Al-Ahly, because of his inability to perform his position with the same efficiency he had previously enjoyed,” Mido stated on the Dorina Change program.
He went on to suggest an alternative role for Mahrez, saying, “It can be used behind the attacker, but his presence as a wing will be very difficult, because Al-Ahly is competing in many championships, and its presence will not give the team the expected addition to the defensive aspects.”
With Al-Ahly’s ambitions stretching across multiple competitions, Mido’s comments highlight the growing debate over Mahrez’s role in the squad.
