Emerging forward Michel Boni has expressed his pride at representing Benin after committing his international future to the national team during their training camp in Casablanca.

The young striker, who plays for Brentford FC, is among several new faces integrated into the Benin squad, known as the Cheetahs.

Speaking in an interview with Jude Adda, Boni explained the factors behind his decision, despite having dual nationality options.

“From the outset, Benin showed genuine interest. The coach wanted me to be part of the project, and it was difficult to refuse.

I also spoke with the captain about what it means to wear this jersey. Representing Benin is a tremendous honor for me.”

The forward said the clarity of the national team’s project and the approach from the coaching staff played a decisive role in shaping his choice.

Since joining the group, he has quickly settled into the squad environment, describing the atmosphere as positive and supportive.

Boni also highlighted the influence of captain Steve Mounié, a player he admired during his early years. The striker recalled watching Mounié’s performances for Huddersfield Town, long before becoming his teammate at international level.

“The whole group is helping me settle in. The atmosphere is excellent. But the one who has impressed me the most is the captain, Steve Mounié.

I remember seeing him score a brace for Huddersfield Town when I was a child… Today, I share the pitch with him. It’s a dream come true.”

The connection with senior players has, according to Boni, contributed to a strong sense of unity within the squad, as Benin continues preparations for upcoming competitions.

Looking ahead, the forward outlined his ambitions with the national team, beginning with establishing himself as a regular starter. Beyond that, he has set clear collective targets for the years to come.

“In the short term, I want to gradually establish myself and help the team. In the medium term, the objective is clear: to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the long term, we are aiming for qualification for the World Cup.”

Boni’s arrival reflects a broader renewal within the Benin squad, as the team seeks to build towards future continental and global tournaments.
