Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has defended team captain Michael Olunga’s role in the squad, stating that only a more effective player will bench the striker, who remains Kenya’s top option in attack.
McCarthy, who took charge of the national team in early March 2025, oversaw Kenya’s recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Gabon.
The Stars drew with The Gambia and fell to Gabon in their second outing. Olunga played the full 90 minutes in both games, scoring against Gabon but also missing several key chances—leading to calls from fans for changes up front.
Speaking to NTV, McCarthy reiterated his faith in Olunga, highlighting his qualities and leadership.
The coach emphasized that Olunga’s place in the squad remains secure unless another striker shows they are more capable.
“Michael is one of the best finishers we have in Kenya,” McCarthy said in an interview with NTV.
“I know he receives a lot of negative reviews from people, but if you train with a player like that, then you truly understand his value.”
“For someone who has played and coached at the highest level, it’s rare to find a player of the caliber we have in Michael.
“We have that player in our team, so of course he’ll always be a priority. Other players will have to prove why they deserve to take his place.”
Kenya’s other attacking options include Masud Juma, John Avire, Jonah Ayunga, and Elvis Rupia.
Despite the underwhelming results, McCarthy maintains that Kenya can still qualify for the World Cup as one of the best runners-up—though the path requires four wins and dropped points from Gabon and Ivory Coast.
In the meantime, McCarthy’s focus is on building a competitive team for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to run from 2 to 30 August 2025.
The regional tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
