Michael Olise scored twice and set up another goal after coming off the bench as France beat Belgium 4-1 in the UEFA Nations League, but offered only a brief response when supporters urged him to win the Ballon d’Or.
The Bayern Munich winger was introduced in the 60th minute, with France trailing by a goal. His arrival transformed the match as he helped the hosts overturn the deficit and secure a convincing victory.
Olise’s performance prompted fans at the Stade de France to chant “Olise, Ballon d’Or!” The reaction recalled the support heard for Ousmane Dembele before he won the award in 2025.
The 24-year-old was also widely praised by international media. Spanish newspaper Marca described him as “the star”, while Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport drew comparisons between Olise and France legend Zinedine Zidane.
Zidane himself added to the acclaim, saying of the Bayern Munich player: “What he is doing is simply exceptional.”
Olise’s France team-mate Andy Diouf also highlighted his influence, calling him a top-class player who has the ability to change the course of matches.
However, Olise appeared embarrassed when asked after the final whistle about the crowd’s calls for him to receive the Ballon d’Or. He replied: “I have nothing to say,” before declining to discuss the subject further and going to the dressing room.
Instead, Olise focused on France’s collective effort and the difficulty of breaking down Belgium’s compact defence.
“We had difficulties against a well-organised Belgian defence, but we continued to put pressure on them until we turned the result around,” he said.
He also praised Zidane’s ideas and the level France had shown across their four matches.
Olise is already among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, alongside prominent players including Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on 26 October.
