Michael Essien Nearing AC Milan Exit, MLS Move Likely
It appears that Michael Essien’s stint at AC Milan is coming to an end. According to several Italian media outlets, the Ghanaian midfielder is expected to leave the Rossoneri in the January transfer window, with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) looking increasingly likely.
Essien, now 31, has struggled to convince manager Filippo Inzaghi, featuring in only seven matches since the start of the season. The former Chelsea and Lyon star has fallen down the pecking order and is seen as expendable by the club.
In addition to freeing up a spot in midfield, his departure would significantly help reduce Milan’s wage bill. Essien is believed to be earning over €3 million per year, a figure the club would prefer to invest in younger talent as part of a broader rejuvenation strategy.
This isn’t the first time the MLS has been linked with Essien, but this time, the rumors are gaining more credibility as both club and player appear open to the idea.
A move to the United States would mark a new chapter in Essien’s career, possibly extending his playing days in a less demanding environment while contributing his experience to the growing North American league.
