Michael Essien Set to Join Panathinaikos on Two-Year Deal
Former Chelsea and AC Milan midfielder Michael Essien is set to continue his career in Greece after agreeing to join Panathinaikos on a two-year contract.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian arrived in Athens on Monday evening to a warm reception from the club’s supporters, confirming his move via social media.
“Just touched down in Athens and the love from the Panathinaikos fans was incredible. #pao,” he wrote on Twitter.
Essien is expected to earn an annual salary of €1.2 million, subject to passing a routine medical examination. The deal will officially mark the end of his stint in Italy, with his contract at AC Milan having expired.
A stalwart of Ghana’s national team and one of Africa’s most celebrated midfielders, Essien made his name in Europe with Olympique Lyonnais before enjoying a highly successful spell at Chelsea, where he won multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
He later had spells with Real Madrid and Milan, but limited playing time and injuries have seen him seek a fresh challenge in the Greek Super League.
Essien’s arrival is seen as a major coup for Panathinaikos, who will be hoping his experience and leadership can help them in both domestic and European competitions.
