Michael Carrick plans bigger role for Kobbie Mainoo as Manchester United season nears climax
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed his intention to gradually increase the responsibilities of rising midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as the 2025/26 season enters its decisive final stretch.
The 21-year-old, who is of Ghanaian descent, has become a regular figure in the squad since Carrick took charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis. His consistent performances have earned him growing trust within the team setup.
On Monday night, Mainoo featured prominently in United’s Premier League clash against Brentford FC at Old Trafford, playing the full 90 minutes and playing a key role in the team’s 2-1 victory.
Carrick was full of praise for the midfielder after the match, highlighting his all-around contribution across multiple aspects of the game.
“I thought on the back of the Chelsea game, where he was particularly good and showed similar things, with a bit of everything. His build-up play, his taking of the ball, his creation and starting the attacks, he’s so effective with that. But definitely, his duels, his 1v1s, recovery runs and back-tackling – over the last two games he’s taken that up a level. It’s great to see that he can do it,” Carrick said.
The United boss also confirmed that Mainoo is being entrusted with a greater role as the campaign progresses, while still managing expectations around his development.
“We’re trying to give him more responsibility as the games go on. We’re still not expecting too much of him and understand and try to help him a bit, but he’s doing great at the moment,” he added.
