Metinho: Hull City eye move for Basel and DR Congo-Brazil midfielder

Metinho, the DR Congo-Brazil midfielder currently at Swiss champions Basel, is being linked with a move to Premier League side Hull City. The 23-year-old central midfielder, who wears the number 5 shirt in Basel, is under contract at St. Jakob-Park until 30 June 2030 but has emerged as a potential target as Hull assess options to strengthen their midfield.

Hull’s interest comes after Metinho played a key role in Basel’s recent resurgence, featuring regularly in the Swiss Super League and helping the club to the league title in the 2024-25 season. Since moving to Switzerland, he has also gained experience in European competition, including appearances in Europa League and Champions League qualifying campaigns, adding to his profile at the top level.

Born in Matadi and eligible for both DR Congo and Brazil, Metinho has built his reputation as a central midfielder, predominantly right-footed, with solid experience across several European leagues. Before making his move to Basel permanent in July 2025 for a reported €4m fee from Troyes, he had loan spells in the Netherlands with Sparta Rotterdam and in Belgium with Lommel SK.

Basel’s stance is likely to be shaped by the length of his current deal and his latest market valuation of around €8m following his title-winning campaign. With four years remaining on his contract, the Swiss club are under no pressure to sell, leaving Hull City to weigh up whether to turn their interest into a formal approach for a player tied to Basel until 2030.
