Messi scores 75th free-kick goal as Inter Miami draw with San Diego

Lionel Messi scored his 75th direct free-kick goal as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with San Diego in Major League Soccer, leaving him 49 goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo in their career totals.

San Diego took the lead in the 12th minute through Dreyer, but Messi equalised 11 minutes later for Inter Miami.

The goal was the 930th of the Argentina captain’s career. Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, has scored 979 goals.

Inter Miami completed the turnaround in the second half when Luis Suarez converted a pass from Rodrigo De Paul in the 75th minute. Dreyer then scored his second goal seven minutes later to secure a share of the points.

The result leaves Inter Miami on 46 points, level with New England Revolution. They are 11 points behind Nashville in the Eastern Conference of MLS.

San Diego are 10th in the Western Conference with 31 points, just outside the play-off places.

Messi is preparing to continue with Argentina for three more friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin before retiring from international football. The Argentine has already announced his retirement after those fixtures, while Ronaldo is expected to continue representing Portugal.
