Lionel Messi attracted significantly more global search interest than Cristiano Ronaldo after the Argentina captain’s final appearance for his country coincided with a strongly worded statement from the Portugal forward about his dispute with manager Jorge Jesus.
The timing created another chapter in the long-running rivalry between two of football’s most celebrated players, this time away from the pitch. Ronaldo broke his silence to detail his problems with Jorge Jesus and events within the Portugal set-up, prompting widespread discussion on social media about his future and his relationship with the national team.
At almost the same time, Messi experienced a very different moment. He played his final match for Argentina, bringing his international career to an historic conclusion in front of a worldwide audience.
While Ronaldo’s statement generated considerable attention, Messi’s name was linked to a farewell from the team he had led to glory in recent years. The contrasting events produced a fresh contest between the two players, measured not by goals or trophies but by the level of public interest in their names.
Messi leads Google search comparison
A comparison of the terms “Lionel Messi” and “Cristiano Ronaldo” on Google Trends over the last 24 hours showed the Argentina forward at the top of global interest by a wide margin.
Messi’s advantage in Argentina was unsurprising, while Ronaldo was the more searched player in Portugal. However, the results in many other major football markets also favoured Messi.
Search interest leaned more clearly towards Messi in Brazil, Spain, France, England and Germany when the two names were compared directly. The Argentine also led in a large number of major football markets outside Europe and South America.
The figures turned what is normally a familiar sporting debate between the two players into a substantial difference in worldwide online attention during the hours surrounding Messi’s international farewell.
Ronaldo nevertheless dominated the conversation in Portugal after releasing his statement, which intensified the debate over his dispute with Jorge Jesus. Globally, however, Messi’s final appearance for Argentina proved to be the event that drew the greater level of interest.
The timing of Ronaldo’s statement also prompted discussion over whether he had chosen to issue it only hours before Messi’s international retirement in an attempt to redirect attention towards his own dispute with Jorge Jesus and away from his long-time rival’s farewell.
If that was the intention, the Google Trends comparison suggested it did not succeed across a large number of countries. Based on the direct search comparison, Messi’s departure from international football remained the more widely followed story around the world, despite the controversy created by Ronaldo’s statement in Portugal.
