Merlin Polzin explains why Kofi Amoako is struggling for regular playing time at Hamburg
Hamburger SV midfielder Kofi Amoako must continue working hard in training to earn more playing opportunities, with head coach Merlin Polzin insisting that the young midfielder still has areas of his game to improve.
The 21-year-old has struggled to establish himself since joining Hamburg from Dynamo Dresden during the summer transfer window, despite injuries to central midfielders Nicolai Remberg and Bilal Nadir creating opportunities within the squad.
Amoako has largely been restricted to late substitute appearances, with Polzin suggesting that other midfield options are currently further ahead in their development.
Speaking at Wednesday’s press conference ahead of Friday’s Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Hamburg coach pointed to the qualities of Albert Sambi Lokonga, who offers the team considerable tactical intelligence and the ability to dictate play.
He also highlighted the development of Miro Muheim and other players capable of operating in central midfield.
“There are simply areas he needs to continue working on to earn more playing time or a place in the starting eleven,” Polzin explained.
The coach declined to publicly identify the specific aspects of Amoako’s game requiring improvement, revealing that he had already discussed those matters privately with the midfielder.
Polzin challenges Amoako to step up
With Remberg and Nadir unavailable, Polzin believes the increased competition for places also presents an opportunity for the young midfielder to demonstrate his qualities.
“I have also made it clear to him that, with Rambo and Bilal out, he is increasingly being called upon in that position to help the team achieve success,” the Hamburg coach added.
Despite his limited involvement, Polzin was encouraged by Amoako’s performances when introduced from the bench.
“In the appearances he has made as a substitute, he has definitely helped the team. Now it is about building on that,” he said.
Bundesliga development requires patience
Amoako arrived at Hamburg after gaining valuable experience in Germany’s third and second divisions with Dynamo Dresden.
However, Polzin believes adapting to the demands of Bundesliga football requires considerable effort and patience.
“He is now on the verge of establishing himself in the Bundesliga, but that takes a lot, especially hard work and plenty of training,” the 35-year-old explained.
The Hamburg coach remains confident that the midfielder can develop into an important member of the squad, although regular playing time will have to be earned through consistent performances.
Amoako will therefore hope to make further progress as Hamburg prepare to host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday, November 6.
