Mendy hails Mamelodi Sundowns as ‘best team in Africa’ after Al Ahly defeat

Mamelodi Sundowns stunned Al Ahly goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with a 2-1 victory over the Saudi Arabian side in the Club World Cup.

The South African team controlled much of the match and secured a notable win in their home country, leaving Al Ahly disappointed after they had hoped to take a different result from the fixture.

Speaking to television broadcasters after the final whistle, Senegal international Mendy praised Sundowns’ quality and the way they played during the match.

“Sundowns are the best team in Africa, without a doubt,” said the Al Ahly goalkeeper.

Mendy’s comments reflected the difficulty Al Ahly faced in containing the South African side, who impressed with their technical ability and attacking threat throughout the game.

He added: “Sundowns are one of the best teams I have ever played against.”

The goalkeeper said the match had been against a team with significant technical ability and that Sundowns deserved recognition for their performance against Al Ahly.

Sundowns have also won the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup, a title which qualifies them for the next stage of the Intercontinental Cup.
