Memphis Depay emerges as top transfer target for Brazilian giants Flamengo

Dutch international of Ghanaian descent Memphis Depay has emerged as a top transfer target for Brazilian giants Flamengo in the current transfer window, Africasoccer.com can exclusively report.

Depay unexpectedly departed Europe for Brazil in September 2024, signing a two-year deal with powerhouse Corinthians after parting ways with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Establishing himself as a key cog at the club, Depay won his first prize with Corinthians in March 2025 after his outfit triumphed over arch-rivals Palmeiras to lift the Campeonato Paulista.

With his Corinthians contract expiring at the end of July, Flamengo have reportedly expressed strong interest in acquiring the services of the experienced striker.

Flamengo are said to have submitted an official proposal in an attempt to secure the services of the former Barcelona and Manchester United attacker on free transfer.

The Dutch international made an impressive start to life in South America, quickly becoming one of Corinthians’ most influential attacking players. However, his progress was later disrupted by injury problems, which affected his availability and limited his ability to maintain consistent performances.

Despite those challenges, Depay remains a highly respected figure due to his experience at the highest level of the game. The 32-year-old has represented elite European clubs, including PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, while also becoming one of the leading figures for the Netherlands.

A move to Flamengo would also represent a significant change for Depay, who has embraced Brazilian football since arriving in the country.

For Corinthians, losing Depay would be a major setback, particularly given the impact he made during his early months at the club. However, his contract situation means they could struggle to prevent his departure if an agreement is reached with Flamengo.
