Memphis Depay extends Corinthians contract until 2028 after dramatic U-turn
Memphis Depay will remain at Corinthians until 2028 after the Brazilian club reached an agreement with the Netherlands international following days of uncertainty over his future.
The 32-year-old striker had appeared set to leave Corinthians after the club initially indicated that it would not renew his contract because of financial difficulties.
However, negotiations have now resulted in a two-year extension, bringing an unexpected end to the dispute.
Corinthians president Omar Stabile confirmed that an agreement had been reached between the parties. According to ESPN, the new deal is worth about €22.4m, with the figure covering outstanding payments from Depay’s previous contract as well as image rights.
The reported amount does not include potential performance-related bonuses.
Depay’s future had become increasingly uncertain after Corinthians announced that they would not extend his stay.
The decision led to a public response from the former Manchester United and Barcelona forward, who criticised the club’s management on Instagram over what he said were commitments that had not been honoured.
The disagreement threatened to bring an early end to Depay’s time in Brazil, but the latest agreement means the Dutch forward will continue his career in São Paulo.
Depay joined Corinthians in 2024 and quickly became an important part of the club’s attacking set-up. His performances have made him one of the team’s key attacking figures since his arrival.
In 79 appearances for Corinthians, the Netherlands international has scored 20 goals and supplied 15 assists.
Those numbers underline the contribution Depay has made since moving to Brazil and help explain why his future had become such an important issue for the club.
The new agreement ensures that Corinthians will retain one of their leading attacking players for another two seasons, with Depay now committed to the club until 2028.
The extension also brings an end to the uncertainty that had surrounded the striker in recent days. What initially appeared to be a departure has instead resulted in a new contract.
For Depay, the agreement provides continuity after a period of tension with the club’s management. For Corinthians, it represents a reversal of their earlier position and secures the continued services of a player who has made a significant impact since arriving in 2024.
