Algeria’s emphatic victory over Guatemala marked a memorable night for debutant goalkeeper Melvin Mastil, who said fulfilling a childhood dream made his first international appearance even more special.

Starting between the posts, Mastil was handed his senior debut in favourable circumstances as Algeria controlled the match.

The young goalkeeper described the occasion as the perfect introduction to international football, allowing him to settle quickly and gain valuable experience at the highest level.

“I’m happy to have played my first match; it was an ideal game to get my first minutes,” he said afterwards, reflecting on his performance.

Beyond the result, Mastil highlighted the support he received from within the squad, pointing to the role of more experienced teammates in helping him adapt.

He singled out Alexandre Oukidja, Anthony Mandréa and Kilian Belazzoug for their guidance, underlining the collective spirit within the group.

“Zidane, Antho (Mandrea), Kilian (Belazzoug)… they all gave me advice. We talk often; it’s a unique group. The fact that they support and advise me helps me progress and perform at my best,” he said.

The goalkeeper also acknowledged the trust placed in him by the coaching staff, suggesting his selection was based on his performances at club level.

Determined to justify that confidence, Mastil explained that he sought to apply the instructions given to him, particularly those from the coach.

“If they took me on, it’s because they know my qualities, given what I do at the club. I tried to apply everyone’s advice, especially that of the coach. I tried to do my best,” he added.

For Mastil, the appearance represented more than just a debut. Having long aspired to represent his country, he spoke of the pride he felt wearing the national colours and sharing the pitch with established internationals.

“I’ve dreamed of the national team since I was a little boy. It’s a huge source of pride to be around players of this caliber. Now I have to come back down to earth and help the team as much as possible,” he said.

He admitted to feeling some initial nerves when called upon, but credited his teammates for helping him regain composure as the match progressed.

“I felt a bit of pressure when the coach called me, but everyone talked to me and helped me get back into the game. So I arrived without any pressure ,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Mastil expressed his pride at representing Algeria and turned his attention to the team’s next fixture, urging supporters to continue their backing.

“I am very proud to represent my country and to be able to help the team progress. I hope to see many of you in a few days against Uruguay.”
