Mehdi Benatia Set to Join Bayern Munich Amid Transfer Battle
Bayern Munich are closing in on securing the signing of Moroccan defender Mehdi Benatia, with talks between the German champions and AS Roma advancing rapidly.
The 28-year-old centre-back has emerged as a priority for Bayern’s manager Pep Guardiola, who is keen to strengthen his defence following the long-term injury to Javi Martinez. Martinez is expected to be sidelined for approximately seven months, prompting Guardiola to look for reinforcements primarily in the central defensive area. While several full-backs had initially been considered, Benatia has risen to the top of the club’s wishlist.
According to French sports daily L’Équipe, Bayern have tabled an initial offer of €30 million for the Moroccan international. However, AS Roma are reportedly holding out for €35 million, in addition to €5 million in potential bonuses. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing, with sources suggesting that a compromise could be reached in the coming days, paving the way for Benatia’s transfer to Germany.
Benatia’s transfer has attracted interest from several other top European clubs. Chelsea and Manchester United were also contenders to sign the defender, both keen to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season. Reports indicate that Chelsea made an offer of €37.5 million for the player, while Manchester United were preparing to submit a bid imminently.
Despite the interest from the English Premier League heavyweights, the defender is believed to have expressed a preference for joining Bayern Munich. The prospect of playing under Guardiola and competing in the Bundesliga and Champions League appear to have been decisive factors in his choice.
Benatia joined AS Roma in 2013 from Udinese and quickly established himself as a key figure in their backline. His commanding presence, tactical awareness, and aerial ability have earned him praise both domestically and on the international stage, where he captains the Moroccan national team.
For Bayern Munich, signing Benatia represents a vital step in reinforcing a squad that has already suffered key injuries ahead of a challenging campaign. Guardiola’s side will be looking to defend their Bundesliga title and make a deep run in the Champions League, making the acquisition of experienced defensive players a top priority.
The finalisation of Benatia’s move would mark another significant transfer of the summer window, as Bayern continue to invest heavily to maintain their dominance in German football. The deal is expected to be completed soon, once the clubs settle on the financial terms.
