Mehdi Benatia addresses Saudi rumours

Mehdi Benatia has commented for the first time on reports linking him with a potential role at the Saudi Football Federation following his departure from Olympique de Marseille.

The former Moroccan international recently ended his administrative spell with Marseille after serving in several important positions within the club, including sports advisor and director of football.

In recent weeks, multiple reports claimed Saudi football officials had contacted Benatia about the possibility of replacing Ramon Planes, who is expected to leave his position in the coming weeks.

However, Benatia suggested he is not currently rushing into a new project.

Benatia explains reasons behind Marseille departure

Speaking to French media, Mehdi Benatia revealed that his decision to leave Marseille had been carefully considered and was influenced heavily by the departure of former coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Benatia explained that De Zerbi had become deeply attached to the club and its long-term sporting project.

“Roberto De Zerbi was very attached to the Olympique Marseille project, and I know very well how attached he was to the club and what he felt about this experience,” Benatia said.

The former defender also revealed that he had spoken privately with the Italian coach shortly before the situation at the club deteriorated.

“I had dinner with him about 10 or 15 days before the situation deteriorated, and if he chooses to remain silent now, it is because he is carrying a lot inside, and I understand that very well,” he added.

De Zerbi exit influenced Benatia’s decision

According to Benatia, De Zerbi’s departure played a direct role in his own decision to step away from Marseille.

“When he left, I felt it was natural for me to leave with him,” Benatia explained.

“Because he made great sacrifices for the club and for me as well, and he believed in the vision and ambition of the project that Marseille was pursuing.”

The Moroccan stressed that the Italian coach had been a central figure in the club’s sporting plans and hinted that he may reveal more details about the situation in the future.

“I will choose the right time to speak more broadly, but everyone knows very well how important Roberto is within this project,” he stated.

Benatia not rushing into next challenge

Addressing speculation surrounding a possible move to Saudi football, Mehdi Benatia admitted that he is currently prioritising rest following an intense period at Marseille.

“I need some time to rest, and I don’t know if I will start a new challenge soon or not,” he said.

While Benatia did not directly confirm or deny negotiations with the Saudi Federation, his comments suggest that no immediate decision regarding his future has been made.

The former defender remains one of Morocco’s most respected football figures after a career that included spells with clubs such as Juventus FC, FC Bayern Munich and AS Roma.
