Manchester City Target Benatia as Roma Set Transfer Deadline
Manchester City have stepped up their efforts to strengthen their defence ahead of the new season, with Moroccan international Mehdi Benatia emerging as a top target.
Following the departure of Joleon Lescott and uncertainty surrounding the future of veteran centre-back Martín Demichelis, City are in the market for reinforcements at the back. The Premier League champions have identified FC Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala and AS Roma’s Benatia as potential additions to their defensive ranks.
However, City may need to act swiftly if they wish to secure Benatia’s services. According to The Guardian, AS Roma have issued a deadline to the English club, insisting that any offer must be submitted by 21 July.
The Serie A side are reportedly seeking a fee in the region of €25 million for the 27-year-old, who impressed last season with commanding performances at the heart of Roma’s back line. Benatia, who came through the youth system at Olympique de Marseille, played a pivotal role in helping the Giallorossi finish second in Serie A, securing a return to the UEFA Champions League.
Roma are said to be eager to resolve the player’s future quickly in order to plan adequately for the coming campaign. With interest in Benatia growing across Europe, including from other top-tier clubs, the Italian side are keen to avoid a drawn-out transfer saga.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are looking to fine-tune their squad in hopes of defending their Premier League title and making a deeper run in the Champions League. Manager Manuel Pellegrini is thought to view Benatia as an ideal fit for his defensive system — a player with physical presence, composure on the ball, and top-level experience.
City’s hierarchy must now decide whether to meet Roma’s valuation before the deadline or shift their focus to other defensive targets.
