‘Medaase’ – World Cup winner Nico Williams thanks Ghanaian fans in Twi

Spain’s World Cup hero Nico Williams has sent a message of gratitude to his Ghanaian fans, celebrating his historic World Cup victory in his mother’s native language.

Speaking to Ghanaian journalist Rahman Osman in the stadium mixed zone following Spain’s dramatic 1-0 extra-time triumph over Argentina, the winger showcased his African heritage.

When asked to send a message to the people of Ghana who supported him throughout the tournament, Williams happily responded in Twi: “Medaase wai, mo bye bye,” which translates to “Thank you very much, bye bye.”

The Athletic Club winger, born to Ghanaian parents who famously crossed the Sahara Desert in 1994 to seek a better life, became a focal point of global celebration.

After coming off the bench in the 75th minute, Williams delivered the decisive assist to Ferran Torres for the tournament’s solitary winning goal.

Following the final whistle, he emotionally placed his world champion winner’s medal around his mother Maria’s neck in the stadium stands.

The tournament showcased a unique family dynamic, as Nico lifted the global trophy with La Roja while his older brother, Iñaki Williams, represented Ghana’s Black Stars until their round of 32 exit.

With this victory, Nico Williams becomes only the third player of Ghanaian heritage to win the FIFA World Cup, alongside legends Marcel Desailly and Jerome Boateng.
