Mduduzi Shabalala: Kaizer Chiefs star hails debut and Nedbank Cup as career highlights

Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala says making his first-team debut and helping end the club’s long wait for silverware stand out as the defining moments of his career so far.

The 22-year-old, who has rapidly become a key figure at Amakhosi, reflected on his journey during a Q&A with sportswear giant PUMA, after being unveiled as the face of their South African campaign for the new PUMA ULTRA 7 football boot.

Shabalala was promoted from Chiefs’ development structures in December 2022 after impressing in the reserve team and for South Africa’s junior national sides. Since then, he has established himself in the first team and played a part in Chiefs’ long-awaited return to trophy-winning form.

He was involved in the squad that ended the club’s 10-year trophy drought two seasons ago by lifting the Nedbank Cup, and also featured as Chiefs reached the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup last season.

Debut and first trophy ‘special’ for Shabalala

Asked to pick the biggest achievements of his career to date, Shabalala pointed immediately to his breakthrough at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs and his first major title.

“Making my debut for Kaizer Chiefs,” said Shabalala.

“Representing Bafana Bafana for the first time and winning my first ever trophy, the Nedbank Cup.”

That Nedbank Cup triumph not only delivered long-awaited relief for Chiefs supporters, but also marked a personal milestone for the midfielder, confirming his rise from academy prospect to senior-level winner.

His inclusion in the Bafana Bafana set-up further underlined his progress, as he made the step from youth international to full national-team representative.

From academy prospect to attacking mainstay

Shabalala’s elevation from the club’s youth ranks followed standout performances for the reserve side, where his creativity and direct play caught the eye of the technical team.

Since joining the senior squad, he has become an increasingly influential figure in Chiefs’ attack, trusted to operate in advanced midfield roles where he can create and score.

His development has mirrored Chiefs’ attempts to rebuild and reassert themselves in domestic and continental competition, with the club’s recent run to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages offering valuable experience for one of their brightest young talents.

Shabalala also opened up about the kind of football he enjoys playing – and watching – stressing the importance of expression and work rate.

“My favourite type of player is one who plays with confidence, creativity, and freedom,” added Shabalala.

“I enjoy watching players who can express themselves, excite fans, and make a difference in games while still working hard for the team.”

His own style reflects that philosophy, combining flair and imagination with industry off the ball, qualities that have endeared him to Chiefs supporters and coaches alike.

As he prepares for the new season while fronting PUMA’s latest campaign, Shabalala’s early achievements – a Kaizer Chiefs debut, a first Bafana Bafana cap and a Nedbank Cup winner’s medal – suggest there may be many more milestones to come in a career that is still in its early stages.
