Kenyan football’s power struggle has escalated sharply, with McDonald Mariga declaring that both FIFA and Confederation of African Football are investigating alleged corruption within the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

Mariga, acting as FKF president, insists Hussein Rashid Mohammed remains suspended despite the latter rejecting the process as unconstitutional.

The former Inter Milan midfielder says the federation is moving decisively to address claims of financial impropriety, including the alleged misuse of funds linked to the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The involvement of FIFA and CAF marks a significant escalation in the crisis, placing Kenyan football under intense continental and global scrutiny, with governance, financial integrity, and administrative control all under the spotlight.

“It came to the attention of the National Executive Committee that there were serious governance, financial, and constitutional violations, which informed and led to the resolution passed on 24th April 2026. Consequently, the NEC wishes to inform the public that decisive measures will be undertaken to safeguard the integrity of the Football Kenya Federation,” part of the statement read.

Mariga confirmed that key officials have stepped aside to allow for independent investigations and a comprehensive forensic audit, citing allegations of financial impropriety, loss of public funds, and breaches of procurement and financial management laws.

He further disclosed that several institutions, including Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), and Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), are also involved in ongoing probes.

“To ensure continuity of operations, the NEC has mandated me to take up the role of Acting President, which mandate I have accepted and assumed with immediate effect,” Mariga added.

The acting president also announced plans to convene an urgent NEC meeting and confirmed that measures are being taken to preserve evidence, including the freezing of relevant accounts and a review of all existing contracts.

Mariga sought to reassure stakeholders that FKF operations remain stable, pledging that the federation will honor all commitments to partners, including sponsors and broadcast rights holders.

With Mohammed maintaining that the NEC decision is null and void, the standoff now threatens to spiral into a legal and administrative battle, leaving Kenyan football in a state of deep uncertainty.
