MC Alger have agreed a deal to sign South African striker Cassius Mailula from Toronto FC, strengthening their attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup.
The Algerian champions, who have already bolstered their squad with summer signings Aimen Bouguerra, Sid Ahmed Aissaoui and Algeria international Alexis Guendouz, are continuing to reinforce before the global tournament.
Despite their strong domestic form, manager Patrice Beaumelle has been seeking additional firepower to complement a youthful frontline.
At present, Soufiane Bayazid, 28, is the only seasoned striker available.
Youngsters Amine Messoussa, 20, and Moslem Anatouf, 19, both products of the club’s academy, are still in the early stages of their careers.
The squad has also been hit by injuries, with Mohamed Saliou Bangoura, 21, sidelined, while Andy Delort’s future remains uncertain following his return on loan from Montpellier.
Mailula, 24, arrives with experience at both continental and international club competitions.
A product of Mamelodi Sundowns’ youth system, the 1.66m forward made his name in South Africa before moving to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.
Last season, he was loaned to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he featured in both the African Champions League and the Club World Cup.
His time at Wydad saw him play roughly ten matches in the Champions League, contributing with energy and movement in the final third.
In the Club World Cup, held between June and July, Mailula endured a tough start, struggling in the opener against Manchester City in a 2-0 defeat.
However, he bounced back on the final day of the group stage, scoring inside three minutes in a narrow 2-1 loss, showing the sharp instincts that had first drawn attention to his talent.
According to sources close to the club, including the specialist account MCA Insider, the transfer is close to completion and could be confirmed within days.
The move is seen as a statement of intent from MC Alger, who are eager to make an impression on the global stage.
Mailula’s arrival will offer valuable depth and experience, as well as versatility in attack.
His speed, pressing ability and knack for early goals could prove crucial in high-pressure fixtures against some of the world’s top clubs.
With the deal nearing finalisation, Mouloudia’s squad is shaping up for what could be a defining campaign both domestically and internationally.
The club’s supporters will be hoping Mailula’s addition helps propel MC Alger beyond just participation and into genuine contention at the Club World Cup.
