Mbwana Samatta was named the best African or African-origin player in Belgium on Monday during the Pro League’s annual gala, receiving recognition for his outstanding performances this season.
The Tanzanian striker, a key figure in Genk’s successful campaign, stood out among strong competition that included Yohan Boli (Saint-Trond), Mehdi Carcela (Standard Liège), Arnaut Danjuma (Club Bruges), and Landry Dimata (RSC Anderlecht). His consistent scoring and influential play were decisive in helping Genk maintain their challenge for the league title.
Samatta succeeds Anthony Limbombé, last year’s winner, who has since moved on to play in Nantes, France. The award highlights Samatta’s growing reputation in European football and acknowledges his contributions both domestically and internationally.
This season, the former TP Mazembe forward has netted 32 goals in all competitions, combining efficiency and consistency to guide Genk towards potential silverware. Additionally, he has helped Tanzania qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, further cementing his status as one of the continent’s most impressive talents.
Samatta’s recognition at the Pro League gala not only celebrates his individual achievements but also underscores the impact of African players in Belgium’s top-flight football, highlighting his pivotal role in Genk’s title aspirations.
