Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha says head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is not trying to prevent players from expressing themselves, but wants them to prioritise efficiency and scoring.
Ouaddou has criticised what he considers unnecessary displays of flair, particularly when they distract from the team’s objectives. His comments, including a description of late-match antics in cup matches as a “circus”, sparked a national debate about the role of showboating in South African football.
The coach has stressed that Pirates must remain focused and professional until the final whistle. But Mbatha believes Ouaddou’s position has been misunderstood and does not amount to an outright ban on individual skill.
Speaking at Pirates’ MTN8 Media Day at Rand Stadium on Monday, Mbatha said the coach’s main concern was ensuring that his team produced enough goals.
Mbatha explains Ouaddou’s position
“The coach doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t like showboating. He is a person who likes goals and likes playing direct football, but the moment you score more goals, he is a person who can let you showboat,” Mbatha said.
Pirates have several players capable of producing moments of individual brilliance, and Mbatha said those qualities would be welcomed provided the team was delivering in front of goal.
“I believe in terms of him speaking about not liking showboating, it’s because the goals are not enough. So, the more you put four or five goals in the back of the net, he lets you do your own thing,” he told the media.
Mbatha also spoke positively about Ouaddou’s relationship with the club’s younger players, pointing to the coach’s background as a professional footballer and his willingness to support players progressing through the ranks.
“And the coach is one person who is really friendly and able to help youngsters. He played 17 years in the top professional leagues, so I believe it’s something that will continue. I’m encouraging these youngsters coming through from DDC, and I believe it’s something that the coach really wants,” he added.
Pirates prepare for MTN8 final
Pirates’ next fixture is the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, October 10.
The match is scheduled to begin at 18:00, with Pirates turning their attention to securing the trophy after the discussion surrounding Ouaddou’s comments.
The final will bring together two of South Africa’s leading clubs, with Mbatha’s explanation offering further insight into the standards Ouaddou expects from his players as they prepare for the decisive fixture.
