Boussoufa’s Anderlecht Return Collapses as Saudi Move Beckons
Moroccan international Mbark Boussoufa will not be returning to Sporting Anderlecht, despite weeks of intense speculation during the final stages of the transfer window. Hopes of a reunion between the playmaker and his former club officially came to an end last Saturday.
According to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws, talks between the two parties ultimately failed due to diverging ambitions. Anderlecht had hoped to bring Boussoufa back as a key leader—someone capable of lifting the club’s technical level and guiding a young squad. But the 30-year-old midfielder had other priorities, with financial security reportedly at the top of his agenda.
Boussoufa, who made his name at Anderlecht with two Belgian Pro League titles and three Golden Shoes between 2006 and 2011, had been viewed by club officials as the perfect candidate to restore some experience and quality to the side. However, despite mutual interest, the two sides could not bridge the gap between sporting objectives and contractual expectations.
With the Anderlecht chapter now definitively closed, Boussoufa is also keen to part ways with Lokomotiv Moscow, where his opportunities have dwindled significantly in recent months. Limited playing time and a lack of alignment with the club’s vision have pushed the Moroccan star to seek a new challenge abroad.
Reports suggest that Boussoufa is now in advanced negotiations with Saudi club Al-Ittihad, where a two-year contract is believed to be on the table. The move would not only guarantee him more regular football but also come with a substantial financial package, which is understood to be an important factor for the player at this stage of his career.
A switch to the Saudi Pro League would mark a new chapter for the former Gent and Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder, whose career has spanned top divisions in Belgium, Russia, and the Netherlands. Known for his creativity, vision, and experience, Boussoufa could be a marquee addition for Al-Ittihad as they continue to attract international talent.
With the transfer window still open in Saudi Arabia, a deal could be finalized in the coming days. While it may not be the return to Belgium that some fans had hoped for, Boussoufa’s next move appears imminent—and lucrative.
