Mazraoui doubtful for Morocco’s crucial AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Central African Republic

Moroccan international full-back Noussair Mazraoui’s participation in the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers is in doubt, casting uncertainty over his availability for the Atlas Lions. Mazraoui, who was included in head coach Walid Regragui’s squad, is now questionable for the double-header against the Central African Republic, scheduled for October 7 and October 15 at the Stade d’Honneur in Oujda.

Mazraoui’s fitness has become a concern after being substituted at half-time during Manchester United’s recent goalless draw against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s manager, has yet to confirm the extent of the injury, stating only that Mazraoui and defender Harry Maguire were withdrawn due to concerns.

“We had to take them off at half-time. Tomorrow we will see what the diagnosis is,” Ten Hag explained after the match. “We have to assess the situation.

I know what the problem is, but I can’t say if it’s good or bad. We will provide an update soon.”

The 29-year-old full-back has been a regular presence for Manchester United this season, featuring in every match for the Red Devils except their Carabao Cup fixture against Barnsley.

His solid performances, alongside Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana, have made him one of the few bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming start to the season for Manchester United.

Mazraoui’s potential absence could be a significant blow, not just for his club but for Morocco, as he has been a key figure in both setups.

His return to the Moroccan national team has been highly anticipated, following a successful reintroduction in their 4-1 victory over Gabon in the opening round of AFCON 2025 qualifiers last month.

Mazraoui’s strong start to the season has further solidified his position as one of the top players in his role, and his absence would undoubtedly be felt as Morocco looks to secure crucial points in their bid to qualify for the prestigious tournament.

For Morocco, the prospect of facing the Central African Republic without Mazraoui would be a significant challenge. The full-back’s versatility, defensive solidity, and attacking prowess have been central to Morocco’s game plan.

If his injury is confirmed, it would not only be a personal setback for Mazraoui but also a concern for Regragui, who may need to explore alternative options for the right-back position ahead of these critical matches.

As Moroccan fans wait for an official update, the national team’s medical staff will be closely monitoring the situation.

The Atlas Lions will be hoping for positive news, knowing that Mazraoui’s presence could be pivotal in their quest to maintain momentum in the qualifiers.

With the CAN 2025 tournament on the horizon, Morocco is aiming to cement their position as one of Africa’s strongest footballing nations.

The upcoming matches will play a crucial role in determining their path to the finals, and the potential absence of one of their key players only heightens the stakes.
