In an unexpected twist, Abdullah Mahmoud, the midfielder for the Mauritanian national team, is set to join his country’s training camp in Tunisia, preparing for the journey to Côte d’Ivoire to participate in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Mauritanian Football Federation decided to include Abdullah Mahmoud in the delegation despite his exclusion from the final squad due to injury.
This decision was made following the plea of his teammates in the national team, aiming to boost morale after receiving approval from his Swiss club.
Abdullah Mahmoud suffered a severe injury with a compound fracture in the elbow during his participation in the friendly match against Tunisia, which ended in a goalless draw.
The player was initially omitted from the squad, leading his teammate Yassin Cheikh El Welly of Union Monastir to replace him.
Côte d’Ivoire is set to host the 34th edition of the AFCON from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
The Mourabitounes (The Guardians), as the Mauritanian national team is known, will compete in Group D alongside Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Angola.
