Mauritania Wraps Up Training Camp Ahead of African Nations Championship
By BBC Sport Africa
Mauritania’s national team is ramping up preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to be hosted in Rwanda. Under the guidance of head coach Corentin Martins, the Mourabitounes have just concluded an intensive training camp aimed at sharpening the form and fitness of the best local talent.
The camp, which began on January 26, brought together 25 players selected from clubs across Mauritania’s domestic league. It served as a key phase in the national team’s build-up to CHAN, a tournament exclusively reserved for players competing in their home countries’ leagues.
Mixed Results in Warm-Up Matches
As part of their preparations, Mauritania played two friendly matches in the economic capital, Nouadhibou. The first, held last Friday, saw the Mourabitounes claim an emphatic 5-2 victory over local giants FC Nouadhibou. The win was powered by braces from forwards Takhioullah and Baguilly Saleme, with midfielder Palaye also getting on the scoresheet.
However, the team experienced a setback in their second friendly on Wednesday, falling 2-1 to SNIM. Despite the loss, Mama Niass’s goal offered a glimmer of attacking consistency as the squad continues to fine-tune their performance ahead of the continental competition.
Focus Shifts to Rwanda
Coach Corentin Martins, a former French international, is now expected to trim the squad and solidify his tactical setup before the team’s departure for Rwanda. Mauritania will be hoping to make a strong impression at CHAN, showcasing the growth and competitiveness of their domestic football scene.
With their training camp concluded, the Mourabitounes now enter the final phase of preparation, aiming to translate their training-ground progress into results on the continental stage.
The African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be hosted by Rwanda, featuring national teams composed exclusively of players active in their respective domestic leagues.
