Didier Six linked with Mauritania job as coaching vacancy draws interest
Mauritania’s search for a new national team coach is gathering momentum following the departure of Patrice Neveu. While Moustapha Sall has been appointed interim manager, the position remains open and continues to attract interest — particularly from European candidates.
Among those reportedly eyeing the role is Frenchman Didier Six, a familiar name in African football. Six previously managed Togo and guided the West African nation to the quarter-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa — a notable achievement during his first coaching spell on the continent.
Despite his success with the Hawks, Six was not offered a contract extension, with his tenure ending in January 2014. However, his desire to remain involved in African football has remained strong, and the Mauritania vacancy now presents a possible return.
The Mauritanian Football Federation (FFRIM) has yet to confirm whether formal talks have taken place, but the role has long been seen as an attractive project for foreign coaches, particularly given Mauritania’s recent strides in football development.
The national team, known as the Mourabitounes, has made steady progress in recent years, including qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 2019. The next appointment will be seen as crucial in continuing that momentum ahead of upcoming qualifiers.
Mauritania’s officials are expected to assess their options in the coming weeks, with Sall continuing to oversee the team on an interim basis.
