Mauritania head coach Amir Abdou has expressed his aspiration to replicate Hervé Renard’s success in winning the AFCON title with Zambia in 2012 during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations set to commence on the 13th of this month.

Abdou conveyed in a statement to Afrique Foot: “It remains challenging for us. We must be realistic. Emulating the path achieved by Hervé Renard with the Zambian national team would bring me joy.”

He continued, emphasizing the allure of the tournament: “This AFCON appears captivating and promises intense competition. Fans can anticipate thrilling matches as all participating teams are fervently vying for the coveted cup.”

The Mauritanian national team are eager to prolong their presence in Ivory Coast following recent successes, having featured in the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt and the 2021 edition in Cameroon.

Placed in Group D of the AFCON, Mauritania faces formidable opponents in Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Angola.

Abdou remains pragmatic about the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about the team’s potential for success in the prestigious tournament.

The 51-year-old tactician guided Comoros to the Round of 16 stage in the last edition of the AFCON when the islanders were making their debut in the tournament.
